What is a cockroach?
The cockroach is an insect of the order Dictyoptera. There are two types of cockroaches in the UK – the German Cockroach (Blattella germanica) and the slightly larger Oriental Cockroach (Blatta orientalis.)
Who is affected by cockroaches?
Cockroaches can affect heated buildings where they may rapidly spread if conditions are suitable, such as hotels, laundries, bakeries and multi-occupation dwellings, particularly in large urban areas.
What are the signs of cockroaches?
As cockroaches are usually inactive during the day. Since they need a free-water source for drinking, they tend to hide during the day in the vicinity of taps, sinks and drains. The more severe an infestation, the more likely you are to see a cockroach during the day. One of the most common signs of a cockroach infestation is the presence of small, dark brown, oval shaped egg casings from recently hatched cockroaches. Another sign is specks of faecal matter and regurgitated food. Cockroaches also give off a strong, very oily odour, which becomes extremely pungent when large numbers of the insects are present.
