Bed bugs

Getting rid of a bed bug problem is vital to the well being and safety of your family and pets. Where do bed bugs come from?

Bed bugs are small, crawling insects that get their name from being found in areas where people sleep and rest - but how do they get there? International travel has led to an increase in bed bug infestations. Beg bugs cannot fly so they are usually moved around unknowingly by people. Bed bugs in infested hotels will latch on to clothing and luggage, resulting in a new infestation at the next destination – quite often the traveller’s home! Family members who live away from home (such as at university) have been known to bring bed bugs back in their luggage when visiting.

As a beg bug infestation grows, they will move into other bedrooms. If you live in block of flats, you may find your bed bug problem has come from your neighbours.

When moving into a new property, always check for signs of a bed bug problem (see below) especially if the property hasn’t been vacant for very long. If purchasing second-hand furniture, ensure there are no bed bug infestations within the furniture before bringing it into your home.

Signs of a Bed Bug Problem

  • faecal stains and egg casings around bed areas
  • blood spots left by engorged bed bugs
  • cast skins left behind during growth stages
  • where there is a heavy infestation, there can be a sweet smell similar to almonds
  • discovery of bites on your body – the bite causes an allergic reaction causing swelling, itching and burning

To get rid of your bed bug problem it is always recommended to seek professional help to avoid re-infestation. Contact your local branch or call  to speak to a one of our pest control experts.
