Cockroaches

Getting rid of a cockroach infestation is vital to the well being of your family and home. There are two types of cockroaches in the UK – the German Cockroach (Blattella germanica) and the slightly larger Oriental Cockroach (Blatta orientalis.)

Cockroaches adapt readily to a variety of environments, and especially like the warm conditions found within domestic homes. Cockroaches leave chemical trails in their faeces as well as emitting airborne pheromones for swarming and mating. These chemical trails transmit bacteria on surfaces. They can also passively transport microbes on their body surfaces including those that are potentially dangerous to humans and have been linked with allergic reactions.

Cockroaches are generally omnivorous, meaning they’ll eat pretty much anything – kitchen scraps, dry goods, pet foods and general waste. They’re mainly nocturnal, often hiding away during the day around taps, sinks and drains. Tell-tale signs of a cockroach infestation include the presence of small, dark brown, oval shaped egg casings from recently hatched cockroaches. Another sign is specks of faecal matter and regurgitated food.   Cockroaches also give off a strong, very oily odour, which becomes extremely pungent when large numbers of the insects are present. A female German cockroach carries an egg capsule containing around 40 eggs and a single cockroach can produce 300 to 400 offspring in a lifetime.

To get rid of your cockroach problem, it’s essential to seek professional help. A thorough and planned approach is essential when treating cockroaches. Surveying and monitoring is required and all harbourages will need to be treated. This ensures the problem is fully eradicated and helps avoid re-infestation.
