The National Galleries of Scotland have used the services of NBC Bird and Pest Solutions for the last two years for bird, rodent and insect control. The contract covers eight different buildings in Edinburgh, each presenting their own particular problems. At the Gallery of Modern Art we have the Jencks Landform which has raised grass mounds and a series of ponds and have proved not only attractive to members of the public but for the passing gull population. Thanks to Ian Cain of NBC and his falconry services we have significantly reduced the damage caused by the gulls and provided even more interest for members of the public. I have had a good response from Ian Cain, our local Area Manager, who has kept me fully informed of his visits and findings. The standard of paperwork and Health and Safety documentation has been excellent. This is helped by the fact that Ian is a qualified health and safety practitioner. I called NBC regarding the pigeon problem we had at Dukes Hotel. Pigeons were nesting absolutely everywhere, and the entire courtyard and façade of the Hotel were completely spoiled by debris. NBC Area Manager, Andy Dobbs, was quick, professional and knowledgeable assessing the Hotel and proposing several different solutions that would suit and which would, more importantly, not disrupt the running of a busy International London city centre Hotel. Andy neutralised and cleaned up the front of the building and installed the most effective netting in the most critical areas – since his visit, all pigeons, without exception, have disappeared. Since completion of the work I have received two courtesy calls to ensure I am still happy with the installation. On completion of The Savill Building, a new visitor centre within Windsor Great Park, the Crown Estate identified a problem with jackdaws creating a nuisance on the restaurant terrace. Having environmental, as well as commercial, obligations, it was imperative that we found a way to reduce the nuisance caused by these birds without causing unnecessary suffering to them. NBC provided us not only with the solution to the jackdaw problem, but also with a fascinating attraction to the many thousands of visitors who came through the Savill Garden in the duration.
