Pest of the Month - Gulls
The main problems with gulls, particularly in towns, are with the roof nesting Herring and Lesser Black- backed Gulls. The gulls cause damage to roofs by pecking at the fabric of building, and their nest debris and droppings blocks gutters and drains.
Gulls become an increasing problem in April and July during their nesting season, by establishing and maintaining a breeding territory they can be very noisy, often early in the mornings. During this time they become increasingly threatening towards people and can act aggressively and on some occasions attack people.
Gulls habit of feeding in refuse tips and roosting on and subsequent pollution of reservoirs also causes concern. They have been implicated in the transmission of botulism and Salmonella.
