Wasp numbers rise in the UK
There are 7 species of wasp in the UK; the ones most often seen are, not surprisingly, the common wasp and the German wasp. In 2009 the mild spring and summer provided almost perfect breeding conditions and has led to a significant rise in the number of wasps and wasp nests across the country. Figures recently released by the government show that the number of people treated for insect stings has seen a sharp increase in the past 5 years, growing by more than 50% since 2005.
Cockroaches and Ants – Giving them the slip
Scientists at Cambridge University have developed a repellent that helps give Cockroaches and Ants and the slip. Insects like Ants, Cockroaches are able to stick to most surfaces because they secrete a sticky fluid from pads at the bottom of their feet. The scientists have developed a coating that when picked up by the pads of ants and cockroaches turns the sticky substance into a lubricant causing them to slip and preventing them from climbing.
