Fewer Birds Spotted in Gardens

Fewer Birds Spotted in Gardens

Starling in Garden

One of the highpoints of the winter for bird lovers is the arrival of the different birds in the garden. However, this winter the RSPB has reported many emails and letters from the public expressing their concern with the lack of birds in their gardens.

According to experts, the reason we are seeing less birds in our gardens is all down to mild weather we’ve been experiencing this winter. Smaller birds tend to use more energy keeping warm, so when the availability of crops runs low after autumn, the birds venture into gardens to look for more food to eat.

However, this recent period of mild winter weather has meant the birds haven’t needed the extra food to keep warm. The RSPB also reports that normally around this time of year a lot of the food birds dine on is covered in frost or snow, but this year there is still plenty of berries and insects available in the countryside.
