Proofing Union Square in Aberdeen for Miller Construction & Hammerson
5th October 2009

NBC Bird & Pest Control has been appointed to design and install one of the UK’s largest single bird proofing schemes at Aberdeen’s prestigious Union Square development project.
Union Square, Aberdeen is an exciting £250 million retail led regeneration project around Aberdeen’s city centre harbour area. Opening in October 2009 it will transform Aberdeen's city centre, creating a vibrant and diverse retail and leisure destination. http://www.unionsquareaberdeen.com. In the heart of Scotland’s fastest growing city, Union Square is a modern, retail led, mixed use scheme centrally positioned around the main train and bus stations. Set at the core of the historic, proud and affluent city of Aberdeen, the European capital of the oil industry, Union Square combines a covered mall with a retail park, offering an inviting, traffic free, cosmopolitan, shopping, and dining and entertainment environment close to Union Street.
NBC’s proofing scheme involves the installation of:
* 1000 metres of bird spikes to deter gulls from landing on the retail units leading edges and fouling the front of buildings and walkways below.
* 7000 sq m of netting to protect Scotland’s largest cinema complex and a 10 story, 5 star rated hotel from nesting gulls.
This work follows the successful flying of a team of hawks and falcons by NBCs highly trained technicians during the previous 2 years of construction. This work successfully deterred gulls from visiting the area, removing aggressive behaviour towards construction workers and enabling the completed buildings to be handed over by Miller Construction to Hammerson in clean condition.
