NBC Joins Forces with the Central Science Laboratory with research into Urban Gull Management.
24th June 2009

NBC Bird and Pest Solutions have joined forces with Central Science Laboratory (CSL) to provide falconry knowledge and expertise for research into the development of a reliable and proven technique for the management of urban gull for the Scottish Government.
In recent years the number of gulls nesting in towns and city centres in the UK has increased significantly, bringing with them many anti-social problems such as noise, nest debris, droppings and even aggressive behaviour towards the public.
The independently monitored study aims to determine the effectiveness of falconry in the management of urban gulls and how it can play a greater part in an integrated pest management strategy to deter roof nesting gulls.
NBC provided the CSL Research Team with experienced falconers and highly trained falcons that flew a dawn to dusk schedule seven days per week in Dumfries town centre to monitor the affects of the falcons’ presence on the local gull populations
NBC Bird and Pest Solutions has taken part in a number of independent industry trials including assisting the CSL with a study into falconry as a management technique at landfill sites. The results proved such a success that it now forms the basis of Environmental Agency guidance for bird management on landfills.
