A Matter of Loft and Death in Barnsley

Construction Manager Ray Fozard was nearing completion of the Barnsley Civic Project when the presence of a large flock of pigeons that had chosen to roost in the loft space threatened to cause delays. Every morning the tradesmen would enter this beautiful building to find their tools and equipment covered in pigeon faeces. This had tremendous aesthetic, financial and health and safety implications. Obviously something had to be done. So they called in Peter Burke, the NBC Bird and Pest Solutions Area Manager.

Ray said: "After surveying the site, Peter gave us a number of options on how to address the problem and carefully explained the implications of each one. Because we at ISG rate our environmental responsibilities very highly, not wanting to cause any unnecessary suffering to the resident pigeon population, we chose the option to use a programme of specially trained birds of prey to deter the pigeons from using the loft as a roost. Although some of us were initially skeptical, within a very short period of time, there was a noticeable improvement. I am happy to say that this rate of improvement continued until the end.

Throughout the programme, if he wasn't on site, Peter was always available at the end of the telephone to offer advice. Indeed, on a number of occasions when he was not scheduled to be on site and we had a problem, he attended the site virtually immediately.
