TROUBLESOME pigeons that have been causing a messy problem at a warehouse have been given the heave-ho by three of their more fearsome cousins.

The birds have been causing a problem at Swale Building Supplies (SBS) in Whiteway Road, Queenborough, for several months.

The owners called on the services of the Island branch of Norfolk-based NBC Bird and Pest Solutions, a national bird and pest control company, which set to work on Monday.

The company uses birds of prey - two harris hawks and a peregrine falcon - which are flown around buildings where wild birds have settled and become a nuisance. The birds are brought in every day for five days. After that they are brought back once a week and imitation hawks are placed in the building to make pigeons think the birds have moved in.

This is the first time Dave Green, area manager of the branch in Minster, has used birds of prey on the Island.

He said: "Pigeons can produce huge amounts of droppings and carry a number of diseases."

Chris Yates, Company Director of Swales Building Supplies (SBS) said: "Thanks to Dave Green and his Colleague, who have done an excellent job here at Swale Building Supplies.

We are only a small business on the Isle of Sheppey but still have the same problems as many other larger companies.

We have been faced with pigeons and mess every day often putting our hands in it on the handrail of the stairs.

After the clean up and the amazing birds of prey we are free from it all.

I am even thinking of taking some hawk experience days".
