News - Rodent Populations on the Rise
Rodent Control
Britain is facing a rapid increase in pest populations this year following yet another mild winter which has enabled more rodents and insects to survive and breed this Spring.
January 2008 has been the eighth warmest in Met Office history, with pest populations flourishing in these milder conditions. The Pest Controllers Association believe that the warmer weather has been one contributor of many that have played a vital part in this epidemic. Other benefactors have been the sudden popularity of compost heaps, fast food waste on city streets and the reduction in bin collections.
A spokesman for the Pest Controllers Association said: "There's been a general increase in rodents. One of the big problems is waste from fast-food outlets. A number of authorities have also reduced bin collections- where food is left out, it's potentially a problem."
They also said that there was likely to be a ‘reservoir' of rats and mice which was not yet showing up on surveys. "It is a wondered whether this is a time bomb waiting to explode." Said the PCA Spokesman.
A study by Dr Stephen Battersby, president of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health Officers, found there were usually up to 15 million rats in the country at anyone time. With these rats carrying potential diseases such as Leptospirosis, Salmonella, Listeria and Cryptosporidium it is important that these rodent problems are controlled by professionals.
