News - NBC's Liverpool Branch Bites Back at Mosquitoes
Mark Hudson Hunting for Mosquitoes
NBC has been busy hunting mosquitoes for Veolia. The chemical waste site in Liverpool called in the help of NBCs Area Manager for Liverpool, Chester and Crewe, Mark Hudson, to find out if they were harbouring mosquitoes on site.
A member of Veolia staff had reacted badly to an insect bite which he believed to be from a mosquito. However, there are 30-plus species of mosquito in the UK, not all of which bite.
Mark said, &lsquoI visited the site and took some samples of live mosquitoes and pupae which were sent away for laboratory confirmation. It turns out that the species on site were Chironomus plumosus, non-biting chironomid midges. To the untrained eye they look like biting mosquitoes.
Mark concluded that the biting Aedes species of mosquitoes were more likely to be harbouring in the derelict land adjacent to the site which housed old tyres and dumped waste typical of this species breeding ground.
