News - Peace in Tullos!
Urban Gulls
An Aberdeen Industrial Estate has found peace thanks to NBC Bird and Pest Solutions' bird control services. Shanks Waste Solutions situated on the East Tullos Industrial Estate was attracting a flock of a thousand herring gulls, to scavenge on domestic waste for their daily food requirements. This caused tension between Shanks, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency and many of the neighbouring businesses which had became plagued by the birds. Stuart Riley, NBC’s Senior Falconer in Aberdeen implemented a three month pilot bird control programme of intensive falconry using two female Harris Hawks.
Two weeks into the programme Shanks Operations Manager George Grainger received an email from Richy Turnbell, manager of a neighbouring business Greenwell Office Furniture Limited, he said:
"We don't know how you have done this but you will be pleased to know that we have not seen any seagulls or heard them for almost two weeks. Considering you had hundreds of them on your roofs and on our premises this is quite an achievement."
Shanks are also delighted with NBC’s services, George Grainger said: "It is obvious that it is not just ourselves that are delighted with the results that your service has produced. Even on the days that the Harris Hawks are not at site, there is hardly any seagull activity. Everybody is very happy and comments on how much of a change your service has made to the site and its surroundings."
