News - Midlands Shopping Centres Say Hawks Do the Trick

NBC Using Harris Hawk as Bird Deterrent

NBC Using Harris Hawk as Bird Deterrent

Pigeons had better beware as there is a new bird in shopping centres in the Midlands. NBC Bird and Pest Solutions, a national bird and pest control, Area Manager, Neil Curtis, is using bird control to deter pigeons from nesting in the Regent Arcade, Brewery, Beachwood, Bullring and Kingfisher shopping centres.

The staff at Cheltenham's Regent Arcade was fed up with their feathered foes nesting in the beams of the loading bay outside the centre, so they contacted NBC to solve their problem. Neil flies a Harris hawk as part of the falconry response programme. He has now been flying Reggie around the area and loading bay at different times over the past seven months and scaring off the problem pigeons.

Regent Arcade Centre Manager, John Forward, said, ‘I am delighted with the success of NBC's bird control programme and was equally impressed with the natural approach it took. The birds were becoming a bit of a nightmare - they can be very nice to look at but they can carry a number of diseases which can pose a health hazard.'

Pigeons and seagulls have been a problem around the Arcade for years and staff have tried spikes and netting on ledges where the birds rest and nest to deter them. However they have found the hawk to be the cheapest and most effective way to scare them off without harm.

Mr Forward added, ‘The birds see the hawk and in a matter of minutes they move - he is a great deterrent.'
