Bird Proofing
In some cases, other methods of bird control such as falconry and audio systems are used to disperse the bird problem initially and then to keep the birds from returning, bird proofing can be installed. Where birds and bird droppings in particular are causing a problem, bird proofing if installed correctly is 100% effective day and night for many years as a semi-permanent bird deterrent solution.

some typical applications of bird proofing
There are many bird proofing systems which can comprise of bird netting, bird spikes or bird wires to deny birds access to given buildings or areas. For larger areas, even complete and complex roofs can be proofed with bird netting to completely exclude birds. Naturally, the areas of a building vulnerable to nesting and roosting birds are often difficult to reach. NBC Bird and Pest Control use our own specially trained rope-access teams, who can reach inaccessible areas avoiding the use of scaffolding.
A bird deterrent system called AVISHOCK which is a very visually discrete system can be applied to a whole range of surfaces to deter birds from landing and nesting. AVISHOCK is ideal for situations such as sign proofing but it will not deter from the impact of the sign. It uses a system of track connectors and wires that lay almost flat to the surface and it comes in a range of colours to even further camouflage itself and can be customized to flex and bend to almost any shape.
A specialist installation team who carry out this work regularly will attend the location, and as we are an accredited 'safe contractor' you are assured the job will be carried out safely. Our 15 years of experience and knowledge of bird behaviour ensures the result will be an installation that will be sympathetic to the appearance of the building whilst maintaining an effective barrier against birds.
Typical Applications
Problem: Two out of three storeys of an apartment complex near Whitby harbour had a pigeon infestation, causing slip hazards and other health and safety risks. The birds were roosting and nesting on exposed gas pipes, heating vents and the lighting system over the walkways.
Solution: Due to the complicated shape of the walkways and the areas in which the pigeons were gaining access, a bespoke bird proofing system was devised consisting of bird nets and pigeon spiking, excluding the pigeons from access.
Problem: MITIE called in the expertise of NBC Bird and Pest Solutions to do a bird proofing job for Hugh Christie Technology College, Tonbridge, Kent. The school were having problems with pigeons roosting at the reception and creating an awful mess. The area was covered in so much guano that the caretaker had to clean the walkway everyday.
Solution: NBC Bird and Pest Solutions, the UK leader in bird control, designed and installed a canopy of bird netting at the entrance that has successfully prevented the pigeons perching at the school’s reception area.
Problem: A 25m high tower supplying process water to Grampian Country Foods’ McIntosh Donald abattoir in Portlethen, Aberdeenshire, had become home to a large population of starlings. The birds were causing a hygiene hazard and a great deal of mess.
Solution: A bird netting system was developed and NBC Bird and Pest Solutions, a national bird and pest control company, fully qualified rope access team was deployed to install the proofing in a safe and cost effective way.
Problem: The McManus Gallery in Dundee, Scotland, a Grade 1 Listed building, was being plagued by roosting feral pigeons, whose guano had contributed to the damage of building construction materials being used for renovation purposes.
Solution: NBC Bird and Pest Solutions, a national bird and pest control company was asked to design and install a bird proofing solution to prevent the pigeons roosting yet not detract from the appearance of the gallery. The design used a complex combination of nets, spikes and bird wire to protect the critical features of the
Problem: Birds were using Schlumberger's 4000 square metre industrial unit in Dyce, Aberdeen, as a seasonal nesting site. The birds were causing extensive damage to the property as well as becoming a health and safety hazard from associated mess and aggressive behaviour.
Solution: In one of the largest single proofing projects in Scotland, a bird netting system was installed to cover the building to prevent any birds roosting on it.
Problem: An aggressive flock of gulls were attacking workers at bp site in both Inverness and Aberdeen.
Solution: bp called in Ian Cain, Manager of Scotland branch of NBC Bird and Pest Solutions, a national bird and pest control company, who successfully proofed 15 large oil storage tanks at the Aberdeen site and is now proofing some more in Inverness.
